Why Reading Comprehension Activities?
Like you, we are enormously impressed with the tutoring program Susan Barton has designed for people with dyslexia: The Barton Reading & Spelling System. On a daily basis we see miracles happening in the children and adults we tutor. We follow Susan’s program faithfully as we guide students through the five building blocks of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

The goal of Supporting Dyslexia, LLC, is to provide a focus on the fifth element, reading comprehension, in the context of Susan Barton’s program. As current and former elementary, high school, and adult educators with additional specialties in literacy, ESL, and special education, we wish to connect the background we bring from our professional training and work experience with Susan Barton’s expertise in the remediation of dyslexia.

We write for all Barton tutors. For those who work at public or private schools, our comprehension strategies align nicely with state and district standards for literacy instruction. For parents who are home schooling, the comprehension activities insure that those children will be receiving comparable literacy instruction to their public and private school peers. And for tutors who are supplementing literacy instruction for students enrolled in school, these activities are a “second dose” of higher-level thinking opportunities with the advantage of providing intense 1:1 support for the child.

To that end, we have created a template for each chapter, using best practices in literacy instruction, which scaffolds the lesson for maximum comprehension.
