 Q.  How do I receive the activities?

Each set of activities will be sent as a PDF attachment to an email from Supporting Dyslexia, LLC. This allows you to receive them instantly and be able to start using them the very next day. You will download each set to your computer, and then you have the option of reading them as a PDF document on your computer or printing them out. You can print the activities over and over again -- one set for each student -- without having to buy any workbooks.

An advantage to online use of the activities is the ability to quickly access web sites that we recommend. Each lesson has a link to Yahoo Kids Dictionary, for example, and several activities have links to other web sites that provide additional background information relevant to a particular story.

You have the ability to print out the whole set at once or to print just the lesson you need at the time. There are also blank graphic organizers for you to choose from and print when needed.

Q.  Why did you only create comprehension activities for the Basic stories?

We started with the Basic stories because we found ourselves using them the most when working with students. We would consider writing lesson plans for the Advanced stories if tutors express the desire.

Q.  Can these activities be done by a non-Barton tutor? In other words, if a parent has hired a Barton tutor, is this something a parent could do with their child on the days the child does not work with the tutor? Could a teacher at a school that has a Barton Early Intervention tutoring program use it as independent "seat work" for Barton students who cannot yet participate in the same reading activities as the rest of the class?

We designed our lessons for the Barton tutor to use in the context of the story segment of a Barton lesson. They offer support for the student who has difficulty comprehending what he has read. Attention to comprehension must be addressed during the lesson by the tutor or teacher. We do not advise teachers to use the activities as "independent seat work,” nor do we recommend sending it with the child to do at home, even with parents. Supporting Dyslexia Comprehension Exercises are meant to be used during direct instruction.

The lessons are structured so that the Barton tutor has a script to use if needed, just like the Barton lessons. The overview, provided with each order, explains the comprehension strategies used in the lessons.

Q.  Will you provide any type of support if someone gets them and the student has trouble doing them?

Yes. Like Susan Barton does, we provide free unlimited support. We are available to answer questions either by email or by phone.
