Comprehension Strategy: Determining the Lesson in the Story

BEFORE READING

• Activate Background Knowledge
Tutor asks the student if someone has ever been mean to him. How did he feel? Tutor might also share her own knowledge about the topic. Tutor then says, “You’re going to be reading about all the problems one person can cause.”

• Anticipate Unfamiliar Vocabulary

       o Slob – messy person
       o Jolt – sudden push
       o Brat – a spoiled child

• Set a purpose for reading
Tutor tells the student that after reading this story, he should be able to identify the cycle of being unkind to others and state the lesson in the story.

WHILE READING

• Student reads the selection silently, focusing on decoding.

Tutor says, “Are there any words you need help reading? Any words you don’t understand?”
